Hydrogen bromide Chemical Properties

Appearance and State: Under standard conditions (0°C, 101.3 kPa), it is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, similar to that of hydrogen chloride (HCl), but slightly less pungent. At high concentrations, the odor is sharp and easily detectable.

Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, with approximately 500 volumes of hydrogen bromide gas dissolving in 1 volume of water. This dissolution forms hydrobromic acid (aqueous solution), which releases heat (similar to the exothermic effect of HCl dissolving in water).

Density: Under standard conditions, the gas density is approximately 3.5 g/L, much greater than the density of air (approximately 1.29 g/L). Therefore, leaks tend to accumulate in low-lying areas.

Volatility: Its aqueous solution (hydrobromic acid) is highly volatile, releasing HBr gas at room temperature. Upon contact with water vapor in the air, it forms a "white mist" (similar to the "white mist" of hydrochloric acid, resulting from the combination of gas and water vapor to form tiny droplets).

1.Core Raw Materials for Chemical Synthesis:

Used in the preparation of various bromides, including inorganic bromides (such as magnesium bromide and zinc bromide, used in flame retardants and oil drilling fluids, respectively) and organic bromides (such as ethyl bromide, used as an organic solvent and pharmaceutical/pesticide intermediate). It is a key bromine source for introducing bromine atoms in organic synthesis.

2.Electronics and Materials Processing:

Used as a dry etchant in semiconductor chip manufacturing, it precisely etches metal layers or silicides on wafers to form circuits. It can also be used to prepare functional metal bromide films for applications such as optical coatings and sensor electrodes.

3.Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals:

Used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates such as antibiotics, antitussives (such as dextromethorphan hydrobromide), and anti-motion sickness drugs. It is also used in the production of high-efficiency pesticides (such as deltamethrin) and acid dyes to optimize product activity and performance.
